Former Prime Minister (PM) of Australia Kevin Rudd today announced his retreat from politics. This announcement comes two months after Mr Rudd was defeated in the election of Tony Abbott.

Rudd said he would leave parliament at the end of this week. According to the 55-year-old man, it has long been a matter of thinking for himself and his family over the last few months.

"The decision I made was not done easily," Rudd said in his emotional speech in front of the parliament as reported by AFP on Wednesday (11/13/2013).


"But for me, my family is everything, it always was, and always will be. That's why I will not continue as a member of parliament after this weekend," said Rudd.

Since losing in a landslide against Abbott Sept. 7 election, Rudd has been pushed back by senior Labour figures. The reason, Rudd would be a disruptive influence after a three-year power struggle within the party.


Rudd had become Prime Minister of Australia twice and has served as Foreign Minister (FM) during the reign of Prime Minister Julia Gillard. Rudd was elected as Prime Minister in the 2007 elections by defeating John Howard. But he later abandoned by his colleagues in the Labour Party who are fed up with his leadership style.

Rudd became Foreign Minister Julia Gillard while riding his place as Prime Minister of Australia. But the power of Gillard did not last long. Labour's re-elect Rudd last June, despite Rudd finally lost against Abbott in the election last September.
